The Sega Saturn launched in 1994, selling over 9 million units, being discontinued in 2000.Launching a whole four months before it's scheduled release date, meant that many retailers hadn't yet got units in stock, especially major retailers such as Walmart and BestBuy.
It's believed that not only did the early release of the system, but also Sega's development teams failing to release a game in the Sonic series, also played a part in the Saturns poor sales performance.
The console, due to it's early launch, only had 6 games available at launch time, as third party game developers, had slated release of their titles, for the scheduled official Saturn launch date.
