The Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld video game device developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was
released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America in August 1989, and in Europe on September 28,
1990. It is the first handheld console in the Game Boy line, and was created by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo
Research and Development.
The Game Boy was originally bundled with the puzzle game Tetris.
The Game Boy competed with the Sega Game Gear, Atari Lynx,
and the TurboExpress. Despite these other technologically superior handheld consoles, the Game Boy
was a tremendous success. The Game Boy and its successor, the Game Boy Color, have both combined sold
118.69 million units worldwide.
In 1995, the Game Boy became available in a variety of colours. Rarest is the official Manchester United, red unit. Other
rare colours are the blue and white units. White units were only released in Japan. GameBoy Light is also very rare with just 5000 units produced
in Japan only.
Of the GameBoy range, the GameBoy Advance was eventually born. A bright yellow limited edition Donkey Kong version was produced, but
only 1000 units.
