The Sega MegaDrive (known as Sega Genesis in America), was launched in 1988 (Japan), 1989 (US), 1990 (Europe).

The MegaDrive was discontinued worldwide in 1997 by Sega, yet is still available in many regions today.

Over 40 million units have been sold. The game with the most units released, is Sonic the Hedgehog, due to it being a pack-in title (15 million units). The biggest selling standalone game, is Disney's Aladdin, selling 4 million units.

The mascot for Sega, was Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic's colour is not by accident, he was deliberately the same blue as used in the Sega logo.
