The Playstation was released in Europe, September 1995. Discontinued September 2000, succeeded by a smaller version, the PSone. The PSone was discontinued March 2006.Selling over 102 million units, it was a great success for Sony, becoming the first console to ship over 100 million units. Wiping out its competition, Nintendo 64, and the Sega Saturn.
The birth of the Playstation was not expected, as at first it was a concept as a joint venture with Nintendo, to be a CD-Rom add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Nintendo made a huge mistake of cancelling the project, thus enabling Sony to decide on developing their own console.
Little known to many PS3 owners, PS1 games will work on the Playstation 3.
