PC gaming was never really any competition to established gaming machines until around 1990.

This was mostly because the sound couldn't compete with current market leaders.

However, sound did improve quickly, as did media capacity, which suddenly allowed the PC to become a better gaming personal computer than the Amiga.

In fact, by 1990, DOS comprised 65% of the computer game market, compared to Amiga at 10%, and everyone else below 10%.
